Pilates Classes Faqs



The goal of Pilates, as I mentioned earlier is to create long, strong muscles which result in an overall leaner look. It will take several more weeks to see the results of Pilates in your muscles so don’t expect to have toned arms or legs within the first month. Also, listen to your body and really concentrate — it makes for a better workout.

Both variations of exercise will target the smaller muscle groups to make sure therightmuscles are being activated, and in the correct sequence. As physiotherapists, we at Instinct Health believe that we should lengthenandstrengthen muscles, joints and ligaments, and both of these principles can be achieved in either Pilates or yoga. A Pilates class at Instinct Health will be a 45-minute session using specialised Physiotherapy and Pilates equipment, with exercises that have been chosen based on your individual goals or injuries. Your Physiotherapist will monitor and progress your exercises at a pace that is appropriate for you, and importantly make sure you are completing the exercises correctly.

Whether in a private session, class or at home, practicing on a consistent basis will accelerate your learning and greatly enhance your overall health. Always consult your doctor and a certified instructor before starting any exercise program. You may want to think about taking private lessons before jumping into a class or following a workout video.

Pilates is touted as a great form of physical rehab, and itcanbe if it is done correctly. However, if you have a physical injury and want to use Pilates to recover, you cannot just join any Pilates class and hope for great results. You need to have custom Pilates exercises designed to assist with your specific injury. Using Pilates for rehabilitation is very different to using Pilates for exercise and fitness.

This means both at the correct tempo, or speed, and with the correct body position. You will be cued to think about your breathing, where your limbs are, and which muscles to be concentrating on contracting. Low intensity steady state exercise is low impact to our bones, joints and ligaments which can help prevent multiple injuries including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fractures or broken bones.

Pilates can help you learn how to pull your abs into get the most out of the exercises. When our core is strong, the frame of the body is supported.

As with yoga, Pilates can be modified, but proper teaching and performance of the exercises is crucial to avoid injury. Many forms of yoga require substantial flexibility and mobility of the joints, especially the spine, hips, and wrists. Although most poses can be modified, a person with severe limitations or pain may find it challenging to follow along in more advanced classes. Mindfulness and deep breathing are key features in a yoga practice. Although there are Pilates many different types of yoga, holding various poses and flowing through different series of movements is standard in most classes.

When you move the body, you're trying to move it from the powerhouse, using your abdominal wall to protect your back. You're also working the body very evenly and symmetrically, making sure one side is not working harder than the other. Because of the nature of our studio, instructors are only here during class times or private sessions during which they are occupied with clients. We ask that you book in online ahead of time for one of our new client packages. If you are coming to a group class as a new client, please arrive 5 minutes prior to class start time to fill in your new client contact information and health history questionnaire.

Incorrect form or pushing yourself past your limits may cause injury. Pilates can be expensive, and access to equipment is mandatory for some forms of Pilates.

It centers the body with breath awareness and concentration with every movement. The series of rhythmic exercises promotes good posture, lean musculature, coordination, and balance. Some Pilates equipment can look like some kind of medieval torture device, which is ironic because it makes you feel so good.
